Cisco’s latest market analysis was released several days ago. According to Cisco’s research, 83% of data center traffic will be in the cloud within the next 3 years. A large portion of this increase can be accredited to public cloud services like phone back-ups and tools like DropBox. Cisco predicts that data generated by all people, machines, and things will be 5 times greater in 2019 than it is now. This will be largely due to the growing popularity of the IoT or Internet of Things. (For more information on the IoT click here)

However, what’s even more interesting is that 56% of workloads will occur in public clouds and 44% will occur in private clouds. Since the cloud’s existence, businesses have been weary of the public cloud. This is largely due to lack of knowledge on how the cloud operates. The largest users of the public cloud have been applications with most businesses opting for private use.

Cisco is predicting that tools like SaaS (Software As A Service), IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), and PaaS (Platform As A Service) will be the key factors to the increase in public cloud usage. As companies are learning more about the benefits of these services (automatic updates, remote access, pay for what you use, etc.) and begin to trust these services more, usage of the public cloud will grow.

The majority of SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS utilize public clouds to provide these services to their clients. Public clouds do not mean that your data is visible for anyone to see. It simply means that other users also use the space to store their information. Everyone’s individual data remains private and protected while in the same environment. It is a common misconception that a public cloud is a data free for all. Your data is secure no matter where it is placed.
